POTTSTOWN PA – Although the Borders Express bookstore in Pottstown’s Coventry Mall will remain open and in business, its owner – Borders Group – said Thursday (Nov. 5, 2009) it planned to close about 200 other stores by January (2010).

Twenty-four stores in Pennsylvania – most of them carrying the name of Borders’ Waldenbooks subsidiary – will be closed at the start of the year, corporate Public Relations Manager Mary Davis said. The list includes the Borders Express at The Plaza in King of Prussia PA, 18 miles east of Pottstown; the Waldenbooks at South Mall in Allentown PA; and the Borders Express at Montgomery Mall in North Wales PA.

The company said the closures were part of an “ongoing strategy to right-size” and “emerge with a smaller, more profitable mall chain in fiscal 2010.” It said it intends to reduce the number of stores with operating losses, reduce overall rent expenses and lease-adjusted leverage, and generate cash flow through sales and working capital reductions.
