POTTSTOWN PA – Montgomery County Community College’s hopes to raise $4 million for the redevelopment of a former power plant at 140 College Dr., Pottstown PA, into a regional center for environmental science won an endorsement last week from the TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce.

Kurt Zwikl, left, executive director of the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area; Dr. Karen A. Stout, president of Montgomery County Community College; and Tim Phelps, president of the TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce, display an artist's rendering of the proposed Schuylkill Riverfront Academic and Heritage Center.

The chamber’s Capital Campaign Review Board, which attempts to evaluate for chamber members non-profit capital campaigns that are worthy of merit, announced its backing for MCCC’s proposal Jan. 26 (2010). The college is partnering with the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area to create the state-of-the-art science center on what is deemed to be a contaminated brownfield site.

The facility, on the banks of the Schuylkill River at Pottstown’s Riverfront Park, would be known as the “Riverfront Academic and Heritage Center.”

The college is seeking funding from a variety of sources, including pledges from regional businesses. The project has been designed in phases, and projects will be completed as money is raised.

In addition to courses the college plans to conduct at the center, chamber President Tim Phelps said he also envisioned it as a future incubator space for companies dealing in environmental sciences.

BIRDSBORO PA – Chase the wintertime blues away with fireside tales, of historic, tall, and other varieties, Sunday (Feb. 7, 2010) during a story-telling session that begins at 2 p.m. in the Wayside Lodge at Daniel Boone Homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Rd., Birdsboro PA.

Storytelling was a great way for families in the 18th century to pass the time during the long, dark winters. Homestead volunteers will re-create that atmosphere by reading a few stories geared toward children between the ages of 4 and 8 and their families. The Sunday program features “Adventures with Colonial Kids.”

A cheerful fire will be roaring in the lodge fireplace, but it may still be chilly inside; visitors are encouraged to dress warmly and bring a few extra blankets or quilts.  Light refreshments will be available.

The programs is free. Donations to the Friends of the Daniel Boone Homestead will be accepted.
